Laboratory of structure and functions of mitochondria

A. N. Belozersky Research Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology MSU

Our team
Laboratory of the structure and function of mitochondria of A.N. Belozersky Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University was founded in 1996 by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Dmitry Borisovich Zorov. At present, the head of the laboratory is Egor Yuryevich Plotnikov, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The laboratory belongs to the Department of Bioenergetics, which is headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Dmitry Borisovich Zorov.

The main direction of the laboratory's work is the study of the mechanisms underlying acute pathologies of the kidneys and the brain and the development of promising treatment methods that will enter clinical practice. The members of the laboratory team have significant experience in working with ischemic models of various organs, both in vivo in animals and in vitro in cell cultures, mainly primary ones.

The laboratory members actively use the method of unilateral renal ischemia/reperfusion with contralateral nephrectomy and nephrotoxic substances as models of kidney injury. There is a large methodological and practical groundwork for focal cerebral ischemia, which is realized by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery or photoinduced thrombosis of cerebral vessels. The laboratory uses physiological, histological and cellular biological methods for the experiments. The members of the laboratory have extensive experience with fluorescence and confocal microscopic technics.
